Things to consider when it’s time to repair or replace your air conditioning unit:

The age of your air conditioner
Modern, high-efficiency air conditioning units last 15-20 years on average, whereas older units last 10-15 years on average. If your AC needs repair and is less than 10 years old, it's probably worth investing to repair the unit. If the AC unit is 10, 15 or more years old, compare the cost (of current and possible future) repair vs. cost of AC replacement and make a decision whether your money should be invested in existing AC unit repair or new AC unit installation.

Cost of installation of a new air conditioning unit is between $3000 and $6000 based on your home square footage, desired efficiency and existing system condition. If your AC repair cost multiplied by the age of the unit is less than cost of replacement, it is recommended to have your AC unit repaired. Example: Cost of repair $400 x 8 (8 years old unit) = $3,200.  AC replacement quoted at $4,000  - in such case a repair would be recommended because $3,200 is less than $4,00

R-22 refrigerant
There is a nationwide phase out of R-22 freon due to the way it’s affecting the ozone layer. Because R-22 freon can no longer be manufactured or imported to our country, there’s a very limited availability and price of what is left is increasing at a very high pace and rate. If your air conditioning unit is running on R-22 and has even a small leak of refrigerant, that could be more costly than just replacing the air conditioner that runs on a different, upgraded type of freon.
