Furnace Repair

During the cold winter, on average every furnace will turn on and off three to eight times per hour. All components mobilize and operate in cycles for many hours throughout the day to maintain a desired temperature. Despite the fact that heating units are designed and built to last for years, because they work so hard and so often, they break down sometimes.

Before calling your HVAC contractor for furnace repair, perform the following:

  • Replace the filter

  • Check the thermostat battery

  • Check the main power breaker

  • Turn off the furnace for 60 seconds

  • Turn the furnace back on

  • Wait up to 10 minutes (some thermostats have a delay call for heat)

If your furnace is still not working, call for emergency service

Here are some common issues indicating a furnace breakdown:
1.
No heat and blowing cold air:
Furnace itself has many safety sensors to keep you out of danger. The cold air blowing from the vent could be caused by the limit switch, if it overheats, the system will get locked out for few hours. The fan will run but will not ignite the burner to create the flame and subsequent heat. Call a qualified technician to have your system inspected and repaired.
2.
System shut down unexpectedly:
Diagnostic service is needed as soon as possible to determine what is wrong with the furnace. Sometimes a flame roll out switch is causing the system to shut off immediately. In that situation, call a qualified technician to have your furnace cleaned and checked.
3.
Gas furnace won’t kick on
Most of the time this could indicate a problem with the power supply, in which case it is recommended to reset the main circuit breaker for about a minute, this will reset all codes in the system. Also, replace the filters and make sure the supply and return air vents are not blocked by any household items. A blocked vent can cause the system to overheat and lock itself up. If these simple tasks don't fix the problem, call for a qualified technician to do a full furnace inspection.
4.
My furnace is making noises.
There are a lot of different noises coming from your furnace and only experienced technicians can distinguish them and properly diagnose. Sometimes the noise comes from the duct work and it's easy to fix but sometimes, there is a noise from inside the furnace, which could indicate something like a malfunctioning old component or a wild animal stuck somewhere blocking the system. When you hear unusual noises from your furnace or ducts, call and schedule a service to prevent more damage and fix your heating system right away.
5.
Clogged vents
In a high efficiency furnace, where white PVC pipe goes outside, very often the pipe gets blocked by snow, ice or miscellaneous items, generating fumes (carbon monoxide) build-up inside the house that can be very dangerous. If the vent pipe is clogged, this will also decrease the efficiency of your furnace. Make sure your vent pipe is not blocked with any obstacles for proper system and house ventilation.
6.
Age of unit
On average, furnaces last 10-20 years. If your furnace is less than 10 years old, repairs should be effective, unless a repair is estimated to cost a lot, then compare the price of furnace repair vs. price of furnace replacement and make an appropriate decision. Consider replacing the unit if it's older than 10 years and having issues, as they may arise more often with time.
7.
Busted heat exchanger
The heat exchanger is the heart of the furnace. It takes all heat and also all fumes. If there is a hole in it, it means the fumes are getting inside your house. When the heat exchanger fails, most of the time it's best to replace the entire furnace (similar cost), especially if the furnace is over 10 years old.
